  • The official Wikipedia app for Android was long awaited even though iOS users were enjoying it for quite some time. Once it was finally available, couldn’t help but feel a little disappointed by the lack of a better looking UI and some more options. Fortunately we have been reeling on alternatives long before the official app came and some of them are really good.

LoboWiki is a Wikipedia client that not only looks good but is based on a great idea. The app is currently in Beta, even though you wouldn’t notice the early stage due to it working without a problem. The UI is completely designed to follow the Google guidelines for Android 4.0. It looks and works great. The app is currently available only in English and is not optimized for tablets as of yet, though you can read articles in plenty of languages. The real surprise and appreciation comes when accessing LoboWiki for the first time. Unless you read the Play Store description, you will be probably wondering where are the articles.

This Wikipedia alternative uses a article queuing system to list your searches, as well as embedded Wikipedia links, and pre-fetches complete content included within each topic. This way you are able to read your favorite articles even in offline mode. Real-time search suggestions are also available and, in general the app is very easy to use. All content of interest is automatically downloaded and added to your list, so you can read them any time. While reading you can also use the volume buttons for easy scroll and there is a dedicated button that displays a the table of contents. You can also mark the articles as read.

LoboWiki is available for Free on the Play Store. We hope that future updates will bring more features.
