  • A complete file manager is a must for all Android users. Some manufacturers implement their own, though with very limited functionality. One of the most popular file managers for Android, namely Astro,  has been recently updated to version 4, including a new icon and redesigned UI.

If you want to test the new version 4 of Astro File Manager we have some bad news for you. It is only available to Jelly Bean users as of now now. For devices on lower versions of Android version 3.1.387 will have to do for now. We expect the developer to make available the new version for all soon enough. In the mean time let’s talk about what’s new with version 4. The interface has been completely redesigned and looks very different from what Astro users are used to. It is faster and easier to use than ever including a new start screen that has 3 tabs:  One-Click Searches, Locations & Recent Items. Browsing through them is easy due to the implementation of swipe gestures. You are given quick access to SDcard usage statistics, a task killer and application manager.

Astro currently supports Google Drive and Dropbox online storage accounts with SkyDrive, Box, auCloud (Japan), and others available through future updates. The file manager also supports networking, Bluetooth, SFTP, Zip/ Tar, downloader, thumbnails, search files, application manager, task manager, attachments and more. Too bad root options and advanced features such as file permissions are not implemented but I guess the average user will not miss these options. Let’s take a look at some of the new version highlights:

    • Complete UX and UI redesign making ASTRO faster and easier to use than ever including a new “Home Screen” that has 3 tabs:  One-Click Searches, Locations & Recent Items.  You can also do a right swipe anytime in ASTRO to view these without leaving your current screen.
    • Powerful search capabilities
    • Quickly access and manage all your files regardless of location (Android, PC, Cloud) and save favorite locations.  Current cloud support for Google Drive and Dropbox.  Will soon support SkyDrive, Box, auCloud (Japan), and others.
    • Recent files tab allows you to find the files you have most recently used
    • New side panels (swipe left or right) to allow quicker access to your favorite locations and directories including popular cloud storage services and the ASTRO Tools (SD card usage, Task Killer, App Backup).
    • Easy to use built-in networking module for Windows and Mac (no longer is it a separate download).  Just scan for devices, choose your device and enter the credentials if required.

Astro File Manager can be downloaded for free from the Play Store. You need to purchase the Pro (Key) to remove the ads and support the developer.
