  • I don’t think there is one Android user out there to not have installed at least one app to keep track of their thoughts and things to remember. I am not talking about keeping a diary, but taking fast notes when you feel you need to. The main features of such an app should be it’s speed and features like password protection. A widget is also a must in this category.

This highly popular app will provide everything you need to take simple notes. It also features sharing capabilities, backup options and expandable notifications in Jelly Bean. The latest release brought some very useful features, including a simplified toolbar in the note editor, that allows you to jump straight to the notes created in Skitch. It is also optimized for tablets. There is a free version on the Store and you can purchase the Premium paid package for a bunch of extra features. Let’s not forget about the widgets that are provided as a separate app.

After finding this app I found myself using it a lot. It just may be the fastest and most comfortable note taking tool. The app is provided in the form of widgets of different sizes. There is even a 1×1 widget that with a simple tap opens a window to input your notes. The app is provided for free on the Play Store. Once installed, place one of the widgets on your home screen and start typing.

    Note+ Notes

Not only does it feature a beautiful Holo design interface, it also includes all the features you could want. There are widgets and shortcut included and you have the ability to set a password if you are concerned with privacy. It also auto-saves your notes when pressing the back key after writing something, a feature that many of the apps I’ve tested failed to provide. It is offered for free on the Store with ads. Unfortunately there isn’t a paid version to get rid of the ads.

    NoNonsense Notes

This app features the same modern design that the aforementioned one provides and it also looks very good on tablet devices. It is fast, clean and includes many useful features. There are widget of different sizes, resizeable on Android 4.x and configurable. There is the ability for automatic synch with Google Tasks, the ability to set passwords on notes, move notes between different lists and integration with Android Agenda Widget. It is offered for free on the Play Store, with a Donate version included if you feel generous and what to support further development.

    Holo Notes

Featuring Holo design elements, the developer wished to keep the app as simple as possible. While most manufacturers choose to include a notes app, sometimes all the features that are included make you wish they wouldn’t have sacrificed the usability in order to add more options. Holo Notes provides a fast and clean expirience but some may find it’s lacking some basic features. The developer announced that a widget as well as search should be provided soon through updates and there is also the possible integration with a Google docs or Google task to be added as well. The app is provided for free on the Play Store.
