  • The past week finally brought us Google I/O 2013, but also some disappointments, since Android 4.3 wasn’t announced and neither were the new Nexus tablet or a new Nexus handset. However, we did get a few interesting apps and services and in the meantime we also saw a bunch of cute new games getting launched. Let’s see the 5 most interesting bits of news, apps and games from the Android world over the past week:

    5) Android 4.3 coming later

Since we didn’t get an Android 4.3 announcement this month, it appears that we’ll get one next month. The OS is rumored to only be a minor update and also it appears not to involve the new services and apps (gaming, maps and more), that will be offered separately from the update to existing users. Taylor Wimberly, founder of Android and Me says that Android 4.3 will ship on a Nexus 4 handset, but there’s a theory saying it will come on a Nexus 7 2 slate.

    4) After Earth the Game

After Earth is a brand new movie starring Will Smith and his son, a sci fi flick that will be turned into a game soon. The title is called After Earth, the Mobile Game and it recently got teased. The game is basically an endless runner, that also features some combat and very beautiful 3D graphics. The universe resembles the one in Avatar and you’ll have to face dangerous beasts and plants. You can slide on rocks, go through the jungle and try to escape followers. Coming soon, both the movie and game.

    3) GPS Navigation & Maps Light

If you want a GPS app that will serve your needs and want to download it for free, then the GPS Navigation & Maps Light by Skobbler is what you’re looking for. The software requires Android 2.3.3 and up and takes up 30 MB of space. The app gives you two main features: an app with navigation and voice prompts (turn by turn) and a worldwide travel map. The GPS Navigation & Maps Light software features speed warnings, street sign displays and 3D view.

You can download it from here.

    2) Carmageddon

Stainless Games’ Carmageddon is here now, on Android and the classic game from 1997 returns with street carnage. It was even banned in the 1990s for its gory content, but it’s now here to take over your smartphones and tablets. The app takes up 110 MB of space and you’ll go against 28 crazy rivals, 11 environments and 36 demented levels. There are 30 cars available and you can control the vehicles via analog mode and tilt. A replay system is included here as well, with special effects included.

The app is up for download here.

    1) Angry Birds Abraca Bacon

Angry Birds Seasons Abraca Bacon is the latest release of the Angry Birds Seasons series, with an update that involves magic, clowns, the circus and mirrors. Said mirrors are the main mechanism of the game, allowing the birds to pass through them as if it were a portal, in order to travel to another location in the level and hit the pigs. Angry Birds Seasons 3.3.0 is available from May 16th and comes with the usual pink bird, black bird, inflatable orange bird and the yellow bird that cuts through wood. Pigs in iron cages, clown pigs and more are pictured here and you’ll also see them in cages, for better protection.

The game is up for download here.

I/O 2013 came and went and it appears that June and July will be more important months when it comes to Android releases and Android device releases. I also expect the promised WWDC 2013 game Modern Combat 5 or Asphalt 8, with the showcasing of iOS 7. Hopefully those will also arrive on Android soon enough.
