  • In terms of means to control the mobile operating systems, the touch and gesture interface aren’t a thing of the future anymore. Instead developers are focusing their efforts to develop new means of interaction with the devices, including efforts by the Danish company for eye-tracking software.

The Eye Tribe is meant to represent the effort of former PhD students from the IT University of Copenhagen to create an alternative means of controlling devices. The technology is not only addressed to Android and the developers it will be integrated into any device no matter the platform it runs. The video below shows the technology in action for controlling a Windows 8 tablet. With  $800,000 funding received so far it is expected it will be set in real motion very fast, while the Danish National Advanced Technology Foundation also provided the software firm with a $2.3 million grant for a three-year project.

The new eye-tracking technology has now launched its applications for the Android platform with the developer SDK to be available starting this month – June. It can be used for a great deal of implementations, ranging from eye-activated logins to playing games or simply browsing through photos. The developers have stated that not all of the current Android devices are compatible with it,. though it would only take manufacturers an additional $1 to implement. We look forward to further seeing it in action.
