Sony’s Picture Gallery and Walkman Music Player Ported for ICS ROMs. Download here
Sony kept their promise and slowly updated their entire 2011 line-up, except the Xperia Play, of devices to Ice Cream Sandwich. Their current flagship model, the Xperia S, that came with Gingerbread pre-installed, was also upgraded to ICS. Some of the goodies, in the form of apps, that came with the update have been ported to work on other devices running Android 4.0.
The Sony Album – Picture gallery is a very appealing way to browse your photos. The small thumbnails are displayed, with the most recent picture highlighted in the top, left corner. You can use pinch to zoom gestures on the preview thumbnails to make them bigger and they are automatically scaled to fit the screen. Multiple items can be selected with ease, either by using the dedicated button or by touching and holding on one of them. You can also share and delete pictures. The second tab places the pictures on the map if geotags are available. As for the “online” tab, the app is missing some plug-ins that couldn’t be ported.
The Sony branded Walkman music player looks absolutely superb. You browse the albums and songs by sliding them to the side and touching a cover reveals options for adding to favorites and play queue. In the notifications bar information about the currently played track is displayed, along with buttons for previous, next track and pause. There are also the typical ICS lockscreen controls. The “My music” tab lets you browse your music by tracks, artists, albums, playlists and favorites. There is also a dedicated search button. As is the case with many ported apps, some functionality is missing, rendering the “∞” button useless without some plug-ins. The sound enhancements (equalizer) are also not working on some ROMs. Included, there is the visualizer, for displaying awesome animations when playing music.
