Sega Revives Classic Game Zaxxon, a Space Shooter Available Soon on Android (Video)
Zaxxon is a game you probably don’t remember, since it’s an 1982 isometric arcade shooter game, that was big in arcade rooms. It was developed and released by Sega, becoming an instant classic. The idea is to fly a fighter ship through a fortress, just like in the older Star Wars, if you want a comparison. You’ll shoot enemies and try to hit as many targets as possible.
You should also keep your fuel levels up by replenishing them and that’s done by blowing fuel drums, or at least that was the mechanics in the original title. This 30 year old game isn’t isometric any longer, since it got a 3D port and become a “behind the ship” shooter. All we have right now are a bunch of screenshots and the trailer you see below, so Sega is teasing us, but there’s no launch date yet. The graphics certainly look cooler than in the old title, but the idea of the game is changed and the feeling too.
It’s like making MegaMan a 3D game… you just don’t! Zaxxon also holds a sort of record, being the first arcade game advertised on television, with an ad made by Paramount Pictures, so it was a big deal back in the days. This game was also ported to any type of computer of console you can imagine, so that’s why it’s so popular.
