  • The US Naval Surface Warfare Center have come up with a crazy Android app that is able to secretly record everything around you and then reconstruct it as a 3D virtual model. After the construction is done, the malicious spying user can browse through your surroundings and spy every aspect of your life.

The more powerful smartphones get, the more dangerous they are… That may be a conclusion we can draw from the US Naval Surface experiment we’re detailing here. The devices with this app on rely on their sensors to monitor the environment around in detail and use their powerful CPUs to transmit and receive info at high rates. This is called visual malware and it’s capable of recording and reconstructing a user’s environment in 3D. Then the theft of virtual objects like financial information is possible and data on computer screens and identity information is also vulnerable.

The malware app is called PlaceRaider and it’s able to run in the background of any Android 2.3 smartphone. The malware embeds itself in the camera app that the user downloads and runs, giving the device permissions to take photos and send them. PlaceRaider is then able to take photos at random, record the time, location and orientation of the phone. Image filtering is then applied to get rid of the blurred or dark pics and everything is sent to a central server.

There’s the 3D model of the surroundings of the victim is reconstructed in virtual form and that virtual space can be browsed. Scary, right?
