  • If you ever wanted to back up your texts and MMS messages, the folks of Brilaps have an Android app for you. It’s called Txtract MMS & SMS Backup and it’s priced at 99 cents now instead of the usual $3. With Txtract you can extract/export and back up your texts and MMS messages from your Android handset straight to the phone’s microSD card.

The app reached version 3.6.4 recently and it requires Android 1.6 and up, so it’s compatible with many devices. The software is also very light, at merely 617 kb in storage taken on the device. SMS backup will be created in the format of your choice, either HTML, XML or CSV files. The MMS media will also be copied to your microSD card. It’s very easy now to port entire threads of texts straight to the card and do some spring cleaning on your handset.

Also, clearing away thousands of texts and moving them to your SD storage will make the messaging application run faster. The backup files will be placed in the directory /sdcard/download/txtract/. MMS messages are saved under numbered directory names. You can download the app from here.
