  • The SlingPlayer app for phones became famous on Windows Phone and now it’s available on Android, but not for the usual $30. Instead you can pay merely $14.99 for it, thanks to a special 50% discount. The app is made by Sling Media Inc. and it was last updated on May 10 2011. It requires Android 1.6 and up, so it’s friendly to the majority of Android phones out there.

This software allows you to watch and control your home TV and DVR using only the Android phone. If you connect via 3G or WiFi to a Slingbox SOLO or PRO-HD you will be able to play anything you can watch on the TV on your Android handset. You can also change the channels, control the DVR and watch your favourite TV shows straight from the handset. Supported sources include Cable set top box and DVR satellite set top box, as well as DVR Telco/IPTV set top box, plus DVR Basic Cable and Digital OTA broadcasts.

TiVo and Apple TV are also on the supported list. SlingPlayer for Phones can be used on an Android tablet, but it may only provide imperfect picture quality in full screen mode. Users of the app can watch video on demand and even pay per view programs, a very cool way to check out your favourite boxing match on the handset. Download the app from here.
