  • If you want to hand over your older Android phone to your grandma, you may want to use the BIG Launcher on it, especially now that it’s $3 cheaper, going for $1.5. Created by Big Launcher Team, the software was updated at the end of August and it requires Android 2.1 and up. It takes up just 3.6 MB of space and adds big screen elements for your gramps to see.

The idea is to provide a fast and simple home screen for the elderly to interact with, or for people with sight problems. The BIG Launcher replaces the standard UI on your phone and it’s designed for readability and easy use. You control it with single touches, so there’s no need for swiping or long presses here. All the basic functions of a phone are accessible via a simple UI, where you can’t get lost. Large text and color icons will make it easy for you to distinguish major items.

The most frequently used items are placed at the top of the list, apparently. There’s also a big font SMS editor and the texts are arranged in conversations, with large fonts and color coded arrangement. Big shortcuts for apps are available and recently use apps are at the top of the list. You can get the app from here.
