  • Google was very busy at I/O 2012, unveiling not only Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, but also a new Google Earth app, new Google Maps and this new YouTube app among others. The design has been completely changed and we take the new app for a review spin on our test Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 unit. We’ve logged into the account of sister site Tablet-News.com and we give you the features of the fresh app.

The new homepage includes a left side with a guide to your subscribed channels, YouTube sections and your own account. There’s also a feed of activity based on swiping, showing you the latest videos from your favourite YouTube channels. The “channel guide” on the left side can be pulled out with a swipe and the most important feature of the YouTube app is Preloading, that caches a bit of the video on your tablet or smartphone when you’re connected via WiFi. So, you’ll get rid of the annoying buffering, just by enabling Preloading in the Settings menu.

Once you preload the videos from the Watch Later area for example, they’ll load instantly, but you’ll still need a connection. Apparently, the function doesn’t work on the tablet I’ve tested, but there’s a screenshot below showing it in action on one of our Galaxy Nexus test units. Another feature of the new YouTube app is the ability to use the phone and tablet to comment, like and subscribe while a video is playing on the TV, so it integrates interaction with your HDTV and remote usage.

I also show you how to subscribe to channels, how you can share stuff and comment in the video below. You can download the new YouTube app from here.
