  • First named Babble and then dubbed Babel in a recent leak, Google’s upcoming chat service has leaked again, this time in a bunch of screenshots that show its relation to Gmail Chat. Supposedly, Techradar got the screens from a Google employee, although that should be taken with a grain of salt.

The new Gmail Chat tool uses a threaded messaging style with image thumbnails and not the already traditional text-based layout. There are also a bunch of new emoticons to enjoy and Google+ built in, so you can skip from one to the other easily. You can also link your Google+, if you want to sent pics through Google Talk. The name Babel first appears in these screenshots through a hover-over on a Feedback button, saying “What do you think about Babel in Gmail”.

We’ve also seen Gmail-based Babel slippages and various other mentions of the new service, so we tend to believe the leak is the real deal. Basically, in Gmail Babel will be a redesign and revamp of the Chat area, with Google+ integration. We could see a debut of the product at Google I/O next month, where a possible acquisition of WhatsApp may also be announced.
