  • HootSuite, a social media management startup is in a heap of trouble, as recently there was an error in integrating accounts with Seesmic. That error exposed user names and email addresses and sent users hundreds of emails reminding people of a 60 day HootSuite Pro trial period, that was about to end.

The thing is that the users have never signed up for such a trial, so it was basically a huge spam. The emails in many cases contained other users’ names and addresses, thus revealing personal information. For now, HootSuite CEO, Ryan Holmes has said that he will offer “product credit” for those affected by the problem. The cause of the issue was related to the integration of Seesmic accounts with existing HootSuite user accounts. HootSuite bought rival Seesmic in September this year, trying to boost its enterprise area.

HootSuite is saying that the incident mentioned here affected less than 4000 emails. Lots of users of the service have resorted to Twitter to voice their anger with the spam. TNW reader Matt Navarra even received as much as 485 emails, which can be a huge bummer on a peaceful weekend. Some customers even reported 1000 emails, so HootSuite really botched this one…
