  • It’s been a while since Google went shopping for big names of companies and today it’s purchasing a firm I haven’t heard of, Viewdle. Apparently they’re big with face recognition and Google may need that for some future product. Viewdle is a software firm that specializes in facial recognition technology and considering Android recently brought face unlock to its ecosystem, they may develop that further.

It’s speculated that Google may be looking for a tagging system for Picasa and Google+, something that Facebook is also developing. At some point I heard that Facebook was working with UK pubs to give out vouchers and price reductions for customers who entered a bar and were automatically tagged by a camera with Facebook, posted at the door of the pub. Facial recognition will evolve in the future and it will go past tagging people automatically in pictures you take with your smartphone and also tagging on Facebook.

Google’s Project Glass may require facial recognition, who knows? Or maybe gesture, blink, wink and other control systems need enhancement. Expect further purchases in this area, that’s what we can guarantee.
