  • If you’re looking to make a phone call from the web at reasonable rates, Google Hangouts is here to save the day. The service is available integrated in Gmail, Google+ and a Chrome extension and it’s detailed below.

Calls to the US and Canada are available for free from all countries where Hangouts calls are available. Today’s launch means the desktop calling experience has been improved. It means you can add multiple phone numbers and video members to a hangout call. You can also play sound effects via the Google Effects app. In order to place a call, you need to look for the new phone icon in Gmail, or the Call a phone menu item in Google+ and the Chrome extension.

You will be making calls from Hangouts as soon as the service rolls out over the next couple of days. This is the evolution of Google Voice and Google promises that this is just the beginning. I have to say that it seems the carriers are so buried right now…
