  • Gmail, offered by Google, is probably one of the most used services worldwide. The Android app has been much improved with the release of Android 4.0 but is still missing some basic functions. What can they do to improve the mailing experience?

Sparrow is one of the best email clients the iOS platform has to offer. It has been expected on Android but it never happened. Sparrow provides a complete emailing experience on the iPhone and iPad. It supports swipe gestures, multiple accounts, uses a beautiful interface, has a unified inbox and labels among many other features.

One of the things the Android Gmail app is lacking is pinch-to-zoom functionality. Compared to the iOS standard email client, Gmail for the Google platform seems unfinished and missing some important functions like automatic email re-sizing. The curious fact is that the standard email client that comes with ICS supports pinch-to-zoom, tough emails are still not properly re-sized. Today’s acquisition of Sparrow by Google could mean that the missing functionality in Gmail will be added in the near future. Also, some of the UI features Sparrow is appreciated for will be integrated in Google’s email client. Here is Google’s official statement:

“The Sparrow team has always put their users first by focusing on building a seamlessly simple and intuitive interface for their email client. We look forward to bringing them aboard the Gmail team, where they’ll be working on new projects.”

The Verge also has some updates on the subject:

“The talks have been ongoing for a while; Sparrow was well known, and our source said Google recognized that the five-person-team had a “lot of expertise in how to make mail communication really simple.” While we couldn’t get an exact number, we’re told that Sparrow was acquired for under $25 million, and that there wasn’t a bidding war surrounding the purchase. While our source couldn’t specify a timeline, the goal is to get the Paris-based Sparrow team in-house on the main Mountain View campus.”
