  • XBMC is an award-winning free software media player designed for multiple platforms, including Linux, OSX, and Windows. XBMC functions very well as a standard media player application, supports an almost endless range of remote controls and has a lot of features. We already posted an article about the upcoming release for Android, now it’s time to test it for yourselves.

The XBMC early build is now available for the Android platform. It has already been implemented on devices supporting the ARM v7 hardware configuration. XBMC has also been tested on the new released Nexus Q, announced at Google I/O last month. The current release is not yet optimized for small screen and there are some performance issues with some devices. At the moment only software video playback has been implemented and support for different hardware configurations is limited. Given the fact that XBMC is open source, this release has been compiled by the guys at miniand forums to work with devices like the Mini X Android powered TV companion.

Though the compiled XBMC release has limited hardware support, it has been tested and found working, following a post on XDA Developers forums, on many devices. I installed it on my Galaxy Nexus and tested it and I found it’s working pretty well, even on Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean. The UI is not supposed to be used on small screens therefor the text and buttons often appear very small but respond rather well when touching the designated area. It looks very good and most of the functions are very easy to access. You install add-ons for every category and access local or remote media. Streaming also works very well and video quality is particularly good. It is capable of HD playback.
