One of the exiting announcements Google made in regards to the Play Store app updates back at I/O was Smart App Updates. It is well known that when an update is available for an app, the full APK package has to be downloaded, taking time and wasting data plan MB. Google though they would take the opportunity to announce a new service called – Smart App Updates. What this does is it eliminates the need for the whole APK package to be downloaded when an update is available. Only the parts of the app that need to be replaced will be sent to the device. For developers and users another great news is that they won’t have to do anything to enable the service. Google will handle everything.

A new update for the Google Play Store has also been made available, taking it to version 3.8.15. It is suspected that the new update come as an addition for Google enabling Smart App Updates though it has been proved the new service also works on older versions of the Play Store as it’s retroactive and server-related. After installing the new version of the Store onto my device I haven’t noticed any notable changes. Not even the bugs that I fond frustrating, like saving the position in a scrolled down list of apps after clicking into an app and back, haven’t been eliminated. You can download the APK and side-load it over the previous version from here.

Below you can enjoy two demo videos of Google enabling Smart app updates. The first shows the update process before smart app updates got enabled. The second demos the update process on a number of apps with the new service enabled:
