  • Consumer Reports is an authority when it comes to judging consumer oriented products, like Apple Maps for example. The recently launched iOS 6.0 offers a new mapping solution, that has been criticized a lot over the past days for inaccurate directions and renders of the surrounding environments. Consumer Reports tell us that it’s actually not that bad and compares it to Google Maps…

The publication did the comparison of the two products in day to day navigation operation for a week. They tested the features in a real test drive in the greater New York area and had a Samsung Galaxy S III right next to the iPhone 5, the latter with Apple Maps and the former with Google Maps and Android 4.0.4. Both provided routes effectively, clear guidance and great points of interest integration. However, Apple’s solution trailed behind Google Maps, by offering less customization than Google.

Apple Maps is streamlined and offers basic navigation guidance and limited travel info. Google Maps has better design and shows an improved traffic flow. Voice recognition is comparable between the two, while the actual navigation is decent on both as well. The same POIs in the New York area were shown and while Apple turns to Yelp for restaurants, Google uses Zagat reviews. 3D mapping is a good bonus on Apple Maps and Consumer Reports loved it, in spite of “melting images”.

So, truth be told Apple Maps is not the vile thing it’s made to be, although it is lacking in some areas…
