  • Baidu, a sort of Google from China if you will and the most used search engine in the country released a new Internet browser for mobile. It’s not any browser, it’s one created for Android and it allows users to play Web games and watch videos without a media player. That sounds pretty much like an OS, right?

Baidu Explorer was announced by the general manager of the company’s Mobile & Cloud Division, during the annual developer conference in Beijing. The new “program” as they call it is 20% faster, on average than other mobile browsers available right now. Baidu has a share of 80% on the search engine market in China and now the threat comes from Qihoo 360 Technology Co, maker of China’s most used browser and creator of its own search engine. In Q2 Baidu had 78.6% of China’s search engine market by revenue, while Google had 15.7%.

100.000 web applications can be run through the new browser without needing the installation of extra software, which is great for people who don’t want to use up resources or storage space. However, web applications are a gateway to trojans, malware and problems, if you ask me and nothing’s safe nowadays, especially Android. So, will this catch on as a trend or not? What do you think?
