  • Most of you are probably not familiar with UpNext as they’re not that popular. Founded in 2007, UpNext offer mapping software for the Android and iOS platforms. They advertise their solutions as some of the best, partnering with US Carrier Verizon Wireless to bring high-res 3D Maps. You can check out UpNext HD Maps on the Play Store.

GigaOM has learnt that today Amazon closed a deal to acquire 3D Maps maker UpNext. The fine details of the transaction and Amazon’s intention with this acquisition are thing we can only speculate. As they don’t have a mapping system and their most popular product, the Kindle Fire does not even have a GPS, Amazon might prepare to offer new products and services in the near future. It has been rumored that  the US giant is working on releasing their own smartphone, along with other products. UpNext would help them deliver a complete solution, on top of their wide range of services offered today. We hope further details will be available soon and we’ll be sure to keep you informed on every aspect.
