  • Big summer blockbusters are getting their Blu-ray releases this autumn and winter and among them we found The Amazing Spider-Man. The title is released with a Second Screen app for iPad and Sony’s Android tablets, with the software being demoed below. This second screen companion app syncs with the movie in a Timeline Mode.

This feature pulls up featurettes, storyboards and there’s even a Production Mode that lets users have a glance at the movie making process. The release is restricted to the iPads, the Tablet S and Xperia Tablet S from Sony. The download takes up 500 MB+ of space and apparently, in spite of the Sony limitation, Engadget was able to access it from the Nexus 7 and even the HP TouchPad with CyanogenMod on board. What’s cool is that you can see the movie as a work in progress thanks to the app and figure out how it was all made.

The application content includes scene-specific trivia, interviews, pre visualization sequences and much more. I expect similar releases for other blockbusters, especially for The Dark Knight Rises, that has a lot of extra footage to include, from what I’ve heard. What sounds the most interesting in the case of this companion app is the Production Mode, that allows users to get in touch with the Story, Design, Cast, Location and Stunts, among other details. The app is up for download here.
